We are inviting you to coffee at the Ahwa House, a one night re-creation of a traditional Egyptian Coffee House, inside of The William Grant Still Arts Center.
Please join us this Friday night from 6:30-8:30pm for coffee, tea and sweets. All free!
Together, we’ll all bring to life the main setting from the book the “The Theif and The Dogs” by Naguib Mahfouz.
The traditional Arabic coffee (ahwa), tea (shai), and other Middle Eastern sweets will be served before a 30 minute reading of scenes from the novel. Scenes from the book will be read by professional actors Omar Elba and Ayman Samman.
After the live reading, enjoy discussion groups where educators and families will receive curriculum materials, suggested discussion questions, and sample lesson plans. Curriculum is designed for interdisciplinary subjects and are developed to meet California state content standards. The event will be great for families too, where you will have the opportunity to learn new ways to engage your own children in books and reading. The curriculum activities are also part of The Center’s Literacy Thru The Arts Initiative.
This event is part of the NEA’s THE BIG READ presented by Arts Midwest.
