Has it been 10 weeks already? Yes, it has! This means the students and teachers of The William Grant Still Arts Center are prepping and rehearsing for the Winter/Spring Session culminating concert, Sound of Joy, featuring songs by the great Sun Ra. The William Grant Still Arts Center music education program is unique in its approach of teaching music history and jazz heritage through active, hands on learning for beginning and intermediate music students. Classes have been for ages 3-18 years, and have been FREE for all families thanks to the sponsorship of Music LA. Classes have included clarinet, drums, guitar, keyboard, and vocals, and our youngest have learned ukulele and recorder. The concert will be in the Metropolitan AME Zion Church, across the street from The William Grant Still Arts Center, from 2-4pm.
Our visual art students will accompany music students in a live performance piece during the Sun Ra song “Rocket Number Nine” as part of the concert, wearing costumes that they have made in Cheryl Williams’ Intergalactic Gowns and Gadgets class. We are sad to see our current group of students go, but know that quite a few will be back for Art and Jazz Summer Camp this July. Student visual arts work will also be installed across the street at the William Grant Still Arts Center in a exhibition that will follow the concert. Hope to see you at the Sound of Joy concert this Saturday!
