Gallery Attendant
Maintenance

The Gallery Attendant’s position provides the physical maintenance of the art center to ensure that exhibitions are safe, secure and presentable to our visitors. At the William Grant Still Arts Center, we celebrate diversity, creativity, and the power of artistic expression for all of our community members. The Gallery Attendant will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of our exhibitions, supporting artists, and creating a welcoming environment for our visitors.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience in art installation and de-installation
  • Knowledge of handling and caring for various types of artworks
  • Knowledge of building tools such as drill, jigsaw, level among a few
  • Some heavy lifting may be required
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with artists, curators, and the community

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with the installation and de-installation of art exhibitions
  • Handling and positioning artworks with care and precision
  • Collaborating with artists and curators to bring their visions to life
  • Providing information and engaging with visitors, enhancing their gallery experience
  • Maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the gallery space

Exhibit Preparator

The Exhibit Preparator performs professional level installation of art exhibits at the William Grant Still Arts Center (WGSAC). As part of the curatorial team, staff is responsible for designing and organizing the exhibition layout, supervising and coordinating all aspects of construction and installation of exhibits, developing and maintaining The City’s IIPP report, developing and tracking safety protocol and training for all staff, organizing and maintaining the gallery storage areas and communicate with General Services Department regarding all building repairs, maintain inventory of all installation supplies and tools. Exhibition preparators will also assist with intake and return or exhibition materials. 

Exhibition Management

o   Supervise the construction and installation of exhibits and perform the more complicated production design and installation work.

o   Supervise and train staff in the packing, wrapping, pick-up and delivery of art work, the use of woodshop and safety, and the completion of condition reports of art work.

o   Manage the training of all equipment and materials used in the gallery including the woodshop and keeps a detailed training log. Woodshop equipment such as the drill and other hand tools. Other equipment such as: ladders, cleaning equipment and maintenance of track lights and switches. Materials such as: paint, lumber, paint thinner, hardware, sand paper, wire, cable, plaster, drywall and other miscellaneous supplies.

o   Coordinate with Curators (including guest) regarding delivery (pick up/drop off) of art work.

o   Determine and maintain exhibition and installation inventory of supplies and coordinate the purchase of new supplies and equipment. Order supplies and completing purchase requisitions. Review suppliers and contracts with the Director as needed.

o   Responsible for staying abreast of best practices in handling artwork, install paperwork, and installing practices including the installation of new genre art work.

Exhibition Design

o   Planning and design of exhibition, installation, and signage, including preparing installation

o   Use design software such as Sketch Up to develop exhibition layout in collaboration with the curator.

o   Design storage and gallery furniture including supervising the construction and installation as needed.

Exhibition maintenance

o   Supervise maintenance, security of artwork, and safety of visitors to gallery

o   Supervise the compilation and maintaining of a daily art work inventory log

o   Supervise the tracking of humidity and climate in the gallery.

o   Supervises the cleaning and waxing of gallery floors

o   Maintain and keep all lights in good working order.

o   Maintain and update the Gallery’s Facility report.

•   Staff meetings and training

o   Update Director on the status of tasks and responsibilities on a regular basis at a mutually agreed upon schedule. Perform above duties for special projects as requested.

Arts Instructor

The William Grant Still Arts Center (WGSAC) is creating a pool of applicants for potential temporary part-time teaching positions, in various areas of study such as; Fiber Arts (Doll Making), Dance, Acting and Literary Arts as well as music instruction such as; Keyboard/Piano, Music Composition, Woodwind/Brass, Digital and Analog DJing and Guitar. Currently our classes are in person with some virtual. In addition to these classes, the WGSAC also offers video tutorials on a variety of classes.

Qualifications

●  Be well-versed in the subject area you are applying for.

●  Have the ability to create curriculum independently and scaffold as needed.

●  Be professional, creative, outgoing, and fun.

●  Must love and have experience working with a wide age range including seniors, young children and teenagers.

●  Be comfortable with implementing technology into your curriculum.

●  Communicate effectively with WGSAC staff, in particular staff coordinating education and the center director.

●  An understanding that students of all backgrounds and abilities are welcome and accommodated.

●  Foster an environment of learning for a whole class while also tending to individual needs of students

Program instructors will play a vital role in reinforcing the art center’s culture and expectations through modeling and demonstrations, keeping students actively engaged through hands-on learning, student supervision and by creating a safe learning environment that supports positive peer relationships. As we move into a new era of learning, we are given the opportunity and challenge of designing new ways to deliver arts programs.
